The Kirkwood Plaza Acme supermarket will permanently close in November, as confirmed by spokesperson Dana Ward.
The store, located at 4365 Kirkwood Highway in Milltown, will have its last day around November 16, with its pharmacy set to close earlier on October 8. Customers can transfer their prescriptions to nearby Acme locations or other pharmacies.
Ward attributed the closure to real estate considerations,
clarifying that it is unrelated to the proposed Albertsons-Kroger merger, which has attracted lawsuits and federal scrutiny.
Earlier this year, the store sustained damage when a tornado struck in August, tearing off part of the roof, but Ward confirmed this incident did not influence the decision to close.
The store’s lease with owner Oekos Management ending was the primary factor.
Employees are expected to be offered positions at other Acme locations, although details on how many workers will be impacted were not provided.
The closure is part of a larger pattern, as Acme has closed several other stores in recent years.
Ward emphasized that closing stores is a difficult decision, but the company aims to grow its business through reinvestment and new locations.
