JD Vance Shifts Stance: No Support for Federal Abortion Ban

Ohio Senator JD Vance, the Republican nominee for vice president, has committed to not supporting a federal abortion ban, even though he previously said he wanted abortion to be illegal nationwide.

During an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, Vance defended former President Donald Trump. He told host Kristen Welker that he believes Trump would veto any federal abortion ban if elected president this fall.

Vance said, I think he would, when asked if Trump would block a national abortion restriction. He added that Trump has made it clear he wants states to make their own decisions on abortion, despite concerns from Democrats that Trump’s second term could lead to a nationwide ban.

Vance argued that the Republican Party doesn’t want a continuous federal battle over abortion.

Senator Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat from Massachusetts, also appeared on Meet the Press and criticized Vance’s remarks. She said, “American women are not stupid, and we won’t trust our daughters’ and granddaughters’ futures to two men who have openly bragged about limiting abortion access.

Earlier in March, Trump had suggested he might support a national ban on abortions after 15 weeks, with exceptions for rape, incest, and the mother’s life. He mentioned that 15 weeks seemed like a reasonable point that many people, even hardliners, could agree on. However, in April, he updated his stance, saying that states should decide their own abortion laws.
