Indianapolis, IN – A 20-year-old woman, identified as Alexandrea, has been arrested and charged with domestic battery against a family member under age 14 and neglect of a dependent after an incident on Tuesday left her 1-year-old child with life-threatening injuries.
Authorities reported that Alexandrea admitted to injuring her baby after becoming frustrated with the child’s crying.
Investigators were called to the family’s home earlier this week in response to a report of an unresponsive infant. Upon arrival, first responders found the baby suffering from severe injuries, including head trauma.
The child was immediately taken to the hospital, where medical staff discovered brain bleeding, swelling, and visible bruises on her head, arms, stomach, and buttocks. Emergency surgery was required to relieve pressure on the baby’s brain.
During questioning, Alexandrea, who is seven months pregnant, confessed to investigators that she had become frustrated after her child’s diaper leaked and the baby began crying.
She admitted to throwing the child into a portable crib but later claimed her pregnancy hindered her ability to place the baby properly, causing her to drop the infant. She further explained that the baby fell onto a cabinet and hit her head on a metal object.
Despite noticing the child’s deteriorating condition and loss of consciousness, Alexandrea did not seek medical help immediately. Instead, she called her partner, who was at work, to inform him of the situation. Emergency services were only contacted upon the partner’s arrival.
Alexandrea is currently being held on a $15,000 bond and has been ordered to have no contact with her child. Her next court appearance is scheduled for next week, according to court records. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
