Indiana State Police Warn About Windshield Tinting Laws and Safety Concerns

Indiana State Police are reinforcing the rules and safety considerations surrounding windshield tinting.

According to Sergeant Todd Ringle, the law permits a legal tint of at least 30% light transmission only on the top portion of the windshield, and it should not extend below the AS-1 line, typically marked a few inches down from the top.

If additional tint is needed, a doctor’s note may provide an exemption, but it must be updated annually and kept inside the vehicle.

Tinting your windshield too much can create visibility hazards, especially in low-light conditions, and it can also obstruct eye contact, which is crucial for safety, particularly for motorcyclists, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Side and rear windows can have a tint with 30% or more light transmission, in compliance with the law.

It’s a reminder to all drivers to be cautious about how much tint is applied and to be aware of the potential dangers to themselves and others on the road.
