Indiana Sheriff’s Officer Critically Injured, Suspect Killed in Iroquois County Shootout

A sheriff’s officer from Indiana was critically injured, and a suspect was killed in a gunfire exchange in Iroquois County on Sunday.

Cpl. Brandon Schrieber from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office was helping the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Office with a call on Sunday evening when he was shot by a suspect.

Illinois State Police reported that the suspect was chased by the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department and was believed to have had a hostage in their vehicle during the pursuit.

The chase crossed into Indiana, where the Newton County Sheriff’s Office joined in. The pursuit eventually returned to Illinois, and the suspect crashed in Sheldon. After the crash, the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Andrew Roselius from Clifton, exchanged gunfire with the police. Roselius was shot and killed, and Schrieber was also injured.

Schrieber was first taken to a hospital in Watseka and then airlifted to another hospital in Urbana. As of Monday afternoon, he remains in critical condition.

Illinois State Police are investigating the use of force in this incident.
