Bellingham authorities are increasing patrols at the local high school in response to the unfortunate death of a 16-year-old boy at a party in Northborough over the weekend.
Although the victim’s identity has not been disclosed, it has been verified that he was not enrolled in Bellingham Public Schools. However, a number of young individuals from Bellingham were in attendance at the party, which was attended by approximately 300 people. Tragically, a fatal shooting took place in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Increasing police presence at Bellingham High School is a precautionary measure, as authorities want to ensure the safety of the community and the school.
“After consulting with our partners at the Northborough Police Department, we want to assure everyone in Bellingham and the schools that this incident of violence appears to be isolated and there is no cause for concern,” the department announced in a Facebook post on Sunday.
In addition, they offered their sympathies to the victim’s family, recognising the tragic and senseless nature of the incident. Last month, the Northborough police were informed about a significant gathering at the mansion where the shooting occurred. Even after the homeowner promised that such events would stop, the property continued to be a venue for parties.
Investigators are currently looking into whether the homeowner had any direct involvement in hosting the party and the number of underage attendees present.
The shooting investigation commenced at approximately 1 a.m. on Sunday after a partygoer reported a person displaying a firearm to the Northborough police.
As officers were getting ready to step in, the sound of gunshots rang out, leading to an immediate response. Unfortunately, the young victim, who was only 16 years old, was found inside the mansion and sadly passed away despite the best efforts of medical professionals.
During the incident, a 17-year-old male suffered a gunshot wound to the buttocks, while two others were injured and had to be hospitalised. Three individuals were apprehended at the scene on firearms charges and are scheduled for arraignment. However, at present, no charges related to homicide have been filed.
Amidst the sorrow felt by the community over the loss of a young life, authorities are actively working to safeguard the well-being of students and residents, especially in the wake of this heartbreaking incident.
