Hurricane Helene Recovery: Senator Blackburn Tours Washington and Greene Counties

U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn R-TN visited Northeast Tennessee on Friday to assess the damage left by Hurricane Helene, particularly in Washington and Greene counties.

During her visit, she toured areas such as the remains of the Highway 107 Kinser Bridge and addressed the debris accumulation in the region.

Blackburn spoke with News Channel 11 alongside local leaders like County Mayor Kevin Morrison and EMA Director Heather Sipe.

She highlighted the exemplary response of local officials and her team’s efforts to help residents recover essential documents, including Social Security, VA, and income tax papers.

Blackburn stressed the importance of ensuring that FEMA stays on the ground and that resources are accessible for individuals, businesses, and counties affected by the disaster.

She also praised the volunteer efforts in Tennessee, calling them inspiring as communities came together to help those in need by providing essentials like water, food, and clothing.

Looking ahead, Blackburn emphasized the need for continued oversight of federal agencies such as FEMA, the U.S. Department of Transportation DOT, and the Small Business Administration to ensure they meet their obligations during the recovery process.

She also mentioned that funding for these agencies will be crucial to properly support disaster response efforts.

Blackburn’s office has set up a web page directing flood-impacted Tennesseans to available resources.
