Hoosiers spent millions shopping online this Cyber Monday, and many of those purchases are likely already on their way. However, this time of year also sees an increase in porch pirates—thieves who steal packages left on doorsteps.
Ofc. Tommy Thompson with Indianapolis Metro Police explained that the rise in online shopping during the COVID-19 pandemic led to more stolen packages.
He suggests ways to stop porch pirates, such as using surveillance cameras like Ring doorbells or installing a lockbox that only you and package carriers can open.
Amazon also offers safety tips for customers. Sharyn Ghacham from Amazon mentioned that you can track your packages in real-time to know exactly when they’re delivered.
Additionally, Amazon provides a hidden drop-off location feature that allows you to choose a less visible spot for your package to be placed, making it harder for thieves to see.
