Gracie Patton Mimms Faces Homicide Charges After Grandson’s Accidental Shooting

The tragic case of an 8-year-old Tennessee boy, Philip’e Woodard, fatally shooting himself with an unattended firearm left by his grandmother, Gracie Patton Mimms, has led to serious criminal charges.

On September 14, 2024, Mimms reportedly left her grandson alone with his 10-year-old brother and a 16-year-old family friend while she went to spend time with friends.

During this time, Woodard accidentally shot himself and later died from his injuries.

Court documents revealed that police found four live rounds in the firearm’s magazine, and investigators concluded that Mimms’ failure to supervise played a significant role in her grandson’s death.

Mimms admitted she was aware of the gun’s presence but believed it was unloaded.

On October 3, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department charged Mimms with criminal homicide and aggravated child neglect.

She remains in custody with a $150,000 bond, but it is not clear whether she has entered a plea.

No comments from her legal representation have been made public.

This case highlights the dangers of leaving firearms accessible to children and the legal consequences for failing to secure them responsibly.
