A Fremont mother, Sophia Gastelum-Vera, 27, has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter after her 23-month-old son was poisoned by fentanyl at home, according to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
Gastelum-Vera could face up to three years in state prison when she is sentenced on October 21.
On October 18, 2023, Gastelum-Vera and family members rushed the toddler to the hospital, but he was not breathing and was declared dead upon arrival. The East Bay Times reported that the toddler, Kristofer Ferreyra, had a high level of fentanyl in his system.
During a search of Gastelum-Vera’s home, police found drug paraphernalia in the bedroom she shared with her son, which tested positive for fentanyl.
Gastelum-Vera was arrested on November 7 on suspicion of murder but is now out of custody, according to jail records.
