Former ND Chief Deputy Attorney General Troy Seibel Passes Away Amidst Controversy

Troy Seibel, the former Chief Deputy Attorney General of North Dakota, has passed away. Current Attorney General Drew Wrigley confirmed Seibel’s death but did not provide further details.

Seibel was in office when the late Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem passed away in January 2022. Shortly after Stenehjem’s death, Seibel authorized the deletion of his state email account. Seibel resigned two months later, after Wrigley took over as Attorney General.

An investigation later revealed that Seibel had also ordered the deletion of his own emails after his resignation. These actions came to light following media requests related to a costly remodeling project overseen by the Attorney General’s office, which Seibel was involved in.

Although an investigation into the email deletions and the building project was conducted, no charges were filed due to limitations in the investigation.

The case also intersected with a federal investigation involving former state Senator Ray Holmberg, who recently pleaded guilty to a federal child sex tourism charge. Some of Stenehjem’s emails, discovered during the investigation into Holmberg, have been released, but they offered little information on the building project or the Holmberg case. More emails are expected to be released after the conclusion of the Holmberg case.

Before his role as Chief Deputy Attorney General, Seibel served as Commissioner of Labor and Human Rights under Governor Jack Dalrymple.
