Flash Flood Watch Issued for Tri-City Area Due to Heavy Rainfall

Heavy rain on Saturday has triggered a flash-flood watch for the Tri-City area, effective until 10 p.m., according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The NWS office in Wakefield issued the advisory at 3:40 p.m., covering central, southern, and southeastern Virginia. Slow-moving showers and thunderstorms are causing rainfall of 2-3 inches per hour, potentially leading to flooding in low-lying areas due to excessive runoff.

“Additionally, portions of the area have received significant rain over the past few days, which could worsen these flooding conditions,” the NWS Wakefield advisory stated.

A flood warning was issued for metro Richmond, set to expire at 6 p.m., with similar warnings for parts of the Northern Neck and Peninsula areas of Virginia.

In Petersburg, the rain has already caused flooding on East Wythe Street at McKeever Street near Interstate 95; East Bank and Madison streets near the YMCA building; Bollingbrook Street between North Crater Road and Madison Street; and River and Fifth streets. Petersburg Police advised motorists to “use caution when traveling through.”

Showers and thunderstorms are forecasted to continue from Saturday evening into the early hours of Sunday, according to NWS Wakefield.
