The Ontario Police Department has reported a tragic incident resulting in the deaths of two individuals following a dangerous pursuit and an officer-involved shooting on Sunday morning.
The events unfolded after authorities received a distress call regarding a disturbance in the 400 block of West Maple Street around 10 a.m. The caller reported that his sister’s ex-boyfriend, who had a history of domestic violence and was armed, was threatening to enter their residence.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers encountered the suspect, who was seated in his vehicle. Despite commands to surrender, the suspect, known to have an outstanding warrant, refused, opting to flee the scene instead.
The pursuit ensued, with the suspect driving recklessly through city streets and even against traffic on a nearby freeway. The chase culminated in a collision with multiple vehicles near the intersection of Grove Avenue and Philadelphia Street.
After the crash, the suspect attempted to carjack a passing motorist unsuccessfully. He then fled on foot, brandishing a firearm, and was eventually confronted by authorities near the intersection of Cucamonga Avenue and Philadelphia Street, where the officer-involved shooting occurred.
Despite receiving medical attention and being transported to a local hospital, the suspect succumbed to his injuries. A handgun was recovered at the scene.
Tragically, two motorists caught up in the pursuit were also injured. One of them, an innocent bystander, tragically lost their life, while the other sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was subsequently released from medical care.
