Leaders at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU recently offered CBS 6 a glimpse into the new $2.5 million “Child Life Zone” currently being built. This 3,000-square-foot area, situated in the Sky Lobby of the Children’s Tower in Downtown Richmond, aims to provide young patients with a space to unwind and enjoy themselves amidst their medical treatments.
Design and Features
Designed to reflect the essence of Central Virginia, the Child Life Zone will feature an array of engaging elements. Among them, an interactive water table resembling the James River and a clubhouse fashioned like an American Indian longhouse stand out. The zone will offer a variety of activities for patients, including movie watching, video gaming, art projects, music making, and snack indulgence.
Purpose and Impact
Bethany Fisackerly, the hospital’s child life supervisor, emphasizes that The Zone is crafted to offer young patients a brief respite from their medical challenges. It aspires to provide them with moments of normalcy and happiness amidst their trials.
Partnership and Funding
In partnership with the Teammates for Kids Foundation, founded by country music star Garth Brooks, the Child Life Zone is funded by generous individual and corporate donations. An anonymous lead gift of $2 million kickstarted the project, with an additional $300,000 from Meta aiding in the development of the maker space, teen lounge area, and gaming pod.
Expected Completion and Management
Anticipated to open by the end of summer, the Child Life Zone will be overseen by a team of certified child life specialists. These professionals are dedicated to aiding children and families in navigating medical challenges through play, education, and self-expression.
National Network
Upon completion, The Zone in Richmond will join 14 other similar spaces across the nation, including locations in Atlanta, New York City, and Los Angeles. It is expected to benefit a multitude of patients, offering them a much-needed break during their hospital stays.
The creation of the Child Life Zone at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU underscores the dedication of the hospital and its collaborators to fostering a more comforting and positive environment for pediatric patients and their families.
