Discover Taliaferro County: Georgia’s Least Populated County with Rich History

Taliaferro County, Georgia, is the least populated county in the state, with only 1,610 residents—a small 3.27% increase since 2020. The county seat is Crawfordville.

Georgia has a total of 159 counties. The largest by population is Fulton County, home to Atlanta, which has over 1 million residents.

Taliaferro County was established on December 24, 1825, and named after Benjamin Taliaferro, a Revolutionary War officer from Virginia.

The county was formed from parts of five other counties and is known as the birthplace and home of Alexander H. Stephens.

Alexander H. Stephens 1812-1883 was a U.S. Congressman from Georgia before the Civil War and served as the vice president of the Confederate States during the war.

Afterward, he became Georgia’s governor. Stephens was known for switching political parties when they strayed from his principles.

The A.H. Stephens Memorial Park, located near Crawfordville, is named in his honor, and his former home is also in Crawfordville.
