Delaware Judiciary Honors the Legacy of Retired Justice James T. Vaughn Jr.

The Delaware Judiciary is mourning the loss of retired Delaware Supreme Court Justice James T. Vaughn, Jr., who passed away on Thursday, October 10th, at the age of 75.

Justice Vaughn retired in May 2023 after over 25 years of distinguished service. Chief Justice Collins J. Seitz, Jr., praised Justice Vaughn’s legacy, noting his hard work, calm demeanor, and significant contributions to Delaware’s legal landscape.

Justice Vaughn began his judicial career in 1998 as the Resident Judge for Kent County Superior Court and was later promoted to President Judge in 2004.

In 2014, Governor Jack Markell appointed him to the Delaware Supreme Court, where he served until his retirement.

Before his judicial career, Vaughn practiced law for 22 years and held public office, serving on the Clayton Town Council and Smyrna School Board. A U.S. Army veteran, he earned his B.A. from Duke University and J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.

He was known for his understated yet resolute approach to the rule of law, leaving a lasting impact on Delaware’s judicial system.
