A proposed plan for the Granite State Credit Union’s new office on Birch Street has passed the Highway Safety Committee, along with a recommendation that the entrance not be moved. Tom Burns, a representative of Maynard and Paquette Engineering of Nashua, represented the credit union and its property at 38 Birch St.
Burns said the credit union is planning to take an existing bank building and remodel it for the credit
union. The company has also purchased an adjacent lot and taken down a residential unit with the goal of added parking. Burns said the company plans to keep the exit from the previous bank building, but slide the entrance closer to Pierce Avenue to accommodate a few more parking spaces.
Highway Director Alan Cote expressed concern about the proximity of the new entrance to Pierce Avenue. “I am strongly in favor of keeping the entrance where it is, and putting the parking lot to the side,” he said, noting it would make a smoother flow of traffic and would not be too close to Pierce Avenue. Member Al Dimmock agreed with Cote, and member Randall Chase pointed out that people heading north will be past the
entrance by the time they realize it’s the credit union. The committee voted to have Administrative Assistant Sharon Jensen write a memo to the Planning Board noting its reasons for keeping the entrance where it is now.
