Council Tables Appointment to Town Treasurer Post

A motion to appoint Robert Gorham as town treasurer until June 30 was tabled at the Feb. 19 Council meeting, in order for the Council to obtain more information. Gorham, who has been serving as deputy treasurer, was originally appointed Oct. 16 to fill out the term of Rita Correia, the town’s last elected treasurer, who resigned and moved out of Derry. Gorham was appointed to fill out Correia’s term through March 12.

On Sept. 11, voters approved an amendment to Section 9:16 of the Derry Town Charter, mandating that future town treasurers be appointed upon the recommendation of the Town Administrator and approval of the Town Council. Based on the recommendation of Financial Director Frank Childs, and on researching best practices in other large New Hampshire towns, Town Administrator John Anderson said he anticipated appointing Dawn Enwright, current Tax Collector, to the combined post of Tax Collector/ Treasurer effective July 1, 2013.

Gorham had agreed to continue in the position until June 30, in order to align the new appointment with the beginning of FY 2014, which begins July 1. “I would like to table this and find out more about it,” Council chairman Brad Benson said. The Council agreed to table the matter until March 5.
