Controversy at Duke University as Students Walk Out of Jerry Seinfeld’s Commencement Speech

Duke University was rocked by controversy when comedian Jerry Seinfeld was met with a chorus of boos from students who chose to walk out moments before his commencement speech. This incident is the most recent in a string of antiwar protests that have spread throughout college graduations across the country this weekend.

Seinfeld, who is 70 years old, became the focus of attention when he stepped onto the stage at the university’s football stadium to give a speech and accept an honorary degree.

The son of Seinfeld attends Duke University, while his daughter has successfully completed her studies there. However, as he made his entrance, a chorus of boos echoed throughout the stadium, which were also picked up by the official commencement livestream.

Videos shared on social media depicted a gathering of students holding Palestinian flags as they departed the stadium, with additional individuals in the stands standing up and leaving.

It is unclear who the boos were aimed at, whether it was Seinfeld, the student protest, or both. However, there were audible chants of “Jerry” shortly afterward, and Seinfeld was eventually able to deliver his speech without any more interruptions.

Duke spokesperson Frank Tramble showed solidarity with the graduating class and affirmed the importance of peaceful expression in light of the incident. Tramble highlighted the significance of ensuring that everyone’s perspectives are acknowledged while also honouring the recognition of academic accomplishments.

Seinfeld’s connection to Israel, both as a Jewish person and his outspoken support for the country, has garnered interest during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. The comedian travelled to Israel after the Oct. 7 attack, which led to a dangerous increase in violence and caused significant loss of life on both sides.

The protests at Duke are part of a larger pattern of antiwar demonstrations on college campuses, reminiscent of movements from previous eras like protests against the Vietnam War and apartheid in South Africa.

Students are urging their universities to take action by divesting from companies that profit from war or the occupation of Palestinian territories, as well as severing ties with Israel. They are passionately advocating for an immediate cease-fire.

Protests took place at various universities across the country during this weekend’s graduation ceremonies. During Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s commencement address at Virginia Commonwealth University, some students walked out in protest. Similarly, at the University of California, Berkeley, chants of “Free Palestine” caused disruptions during the proceedings.

The unrest highlights the increasing worry for the lives of civilians in Gaza amidst the intensifying violence and the demand for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Amid ongoing tensions, the protests continue to have a significant impact, not only within academic institutions but also on the global stage of international relations.
