2012 Honors:
Alec Bernard, a biochemistry major at Saint Anselm College, Manchester, is one of 40 students who was recently inducted into the college’s TAU Chapter of Delta Epsilon Sigma honor society, recognizing him for achieving academic excellence and providing noteworthy service to the college and surrounding community. Delta Epsilon Sigma is a national scholastic honor society for students, faculty, staff, and alumni of colleges with a Catholic heritage. The honor society fosters scholarly activities and encourages a spirit of intellectual community among its members. Juniors must have a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and seniors a 3.1 cumulative grade point average to apply for membership. Applicants are selected by a committee of TAU chapter faculty and administrators based on academic standing, leadership, and service to the college and community.
Ashleigh Collins, a first-year student majoring in biomedical engineering; Andrew Strout, a first-year student majoring in interactive media and game development; and Robert Dabrowski, a first-year student majoring in robotics engineering, were recently named Charles O. Thompson Scholars at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Worcester, Mass., for the 2011-12 academic year. Named in honor of the first president of WPI, this honor recognizes outstanding performance by first-year students. To be eligible for membership, students must receive all A’s and B’s (with a minimum of six A’s) in their academic subjects during their first three terms at WPI.
Jeffrey Peters, a junior majoring in Physics at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Worcester, Mass., recently completed an applied research project in Puerto Rico for D-Term. The project was titled “Development of a Transfer of Development Rights Program for Puerto Rico.” At WPI, all undergraduates are required to complete a research-driven, professional-level project that addresses a problem at the intersection of science, technology, social issues, and human needs. About 50 percent of WPI students complete this project at one of the university’s 26 off-campus project centers, located around the world.
Joseph Swope was one of 22 University of Dallas philosophy students to present a paper during the Department of Philosophy’s inaugural Philosophy Senior Conference on March 17. Swope’s paper was titled “Where Are We Headed? An Ethics of Judgment in a Changing World.” The one-day conference, “Philosophical Aspects of the Digital Age,” addressed the impact of the digital age on human life and culture. The University of Dallas is in Irving, Texas.
Kara Beaulieu, a senior nursing major at Saint Anselm College, Manchester received a Saint Anselm College nurse’s pin at the 2012 pinning ceremony on April 28, 2012. The pinning ceremony is a celebration of a student’s completion of Saint Anselm College’s nursing program and symbolizes preparedness to serve as a compassionate caregiver in the healthcare setting. Kathleen Lawrence was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing at Saint Joseph’s College of Maine, Standish. The society honors undergraduate and graduate nursing students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, and nurse leaders who exhibit exceptional achievements in nursing. Lawrence is a registered nurse who is pursuing her Bachelor’s degree in nursing through the Graduate & Professional Studies Division of Saint Joseph’s, which offers online education for working professionals.
Mary Donlon participated in the National Student Steel Bridge Competition May 25 and 26 at Clemson University, Clemson, S.C. Donlon is a member of the University of New Hampshire’s steel bridge team. More than 500 students from 47 universities participated in the competition. The team from UNH won or placed in its regional competition to qualify for the national event. Stephanie Sayward is participating in St. Lawrence University’s International Study Program for the spring 2012 semester. Sayward, a member of the class of 2013 at St. Lawrence in Canton, N.Y., is studying in Australia.
Steven Bryant, Rachel DaSilva, Anne Deem, Robert Descoteaux and Kyle McGuinness were inducted April 12, 2012 into the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, chapter Alpha Pi Rho, at Manchester Community College. To qualify for membership, a student must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 and exemplify the hallmarks of scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship.
Tiffany Knapp received the Outstanding Senior in Computer Science Award from The College of Saint Rose, Albany, N.Y., in spring 2012. Outstanding Senior Awards are presented to graduating seniors who have at least a 3.50 grade-point average and who meet other criteria specified by the departments in which they study.
