Christopher Durand Appointed CEO of RIPTA, Governor McKee Praises Leadership

PROVIDENCE, R.I. WLNE — The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority RIPTA has announced Christopher Durand as its new Chief Executive Officer. Durand steps into the role after serving as Interim CEO following the resignation of former CEO Scott Avedisian.

Avedisian resigned last year after being involved in a hit-and-run incident at a McDonald’s on Post Road in Warwick.

During his time as Interim CEO, Durand played a key role in steering RIPTA through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, maintaining services despite financial struggles. His extensive experience with the agency includes roles such as Budget Analyst, Director of Finance, and Executive Director of Finance and Budget, giving him a strong understanding of RIPTA’s operations and finances.

Governor Dan McKee praised Durand’s leadership, saying on social media, “Chris brings experience and innovative leadership to the table at a time when RIPTA must continue to adapt to a post-pandemic environment. Glad it’s official!”

New Nominee for Rhode Island’s Housing Department

Governor McKee also announced the nomination of Deborah Goddard as Secretary of Rhode Island’s Department of Housing.

Goddard has over 40 years of experience in housing and previously worked at New York City’s Housing Authority, where she managed $3 billion in construction projects and advanced energy and sustainability programs. She currently leads DJ Goddard Consulting, which advises public and nonprofit agencies on organizational improvements.

Both announcements reflect a focus on experienced leadership to address Rhode Island’s transit and housing needs.
