CHESTER – The Chester Board of Selectmen held its first meeting after the Chester Town Elections on May 20.
During the meeting the board welcomed Steven Couture who was elected as the newest Board of Selectmen during the election.
One of the main items on the agenda was the election of the chair and vice chair for the Board.
Selectmen Jeremy Owens, who previously served as the chair of the Board of Selectmen nominated Chuck Myette to serve as the Board’s chairman. Myette served as vice chair previously.
The Board of Selectmen voted 4-1 in favor of Myette with Stephen D’Angelo voting against Myette to take over as chair.
Selectmen Stephen Landau nominated Owens to serve as the vice chair of the Board of Selectmen.
“I think you’ve done a good job.” he said.
The Board voted 5-0 in favor of Owens to be the vice chair.
Also during the meeting, Acting Chester Fire Chief Philip Gladu announced the hiring of new firefighters.
One of the firefighters that attended the virtual meeting was Abigail Richards.
Gladu said that she lives just over the line in Derry and that she was very excited and very anxious to start with the department.
“I think she completed her paperwork in record time,” Gladu said.
Gladu said that she currently is an EMT basic.
“We are very happy to have her on our team,” he said.
Gladu said that they also had a couple members who have recently returned back to the department.
“A lot of action is happening,” he said.
Alexander Hodosi was also announced as the new full-time firefighter with the department.
“We’re very happy to have him on board,” Gladu said, saying that he has already filled in for many shifts with the department.
“He’s going to be a welcome addition to the department as a full-time member,” he said.
“We really appreciate all the hard work you’re all doing down there,” Myette said.
Also during the meeting the Board discussed the possibility of going back to in person meetings, after their meetings being virtual since the beginning of the pandmeic.
D’Angelo said that he thinks they are ready to have meetings noting that all the Selectmen have been vaccinated.
“I think we should start transitioning as soon as we can. I just think that it’s time,” he said.
Couture said that he is okay with having the meetings in person again but was concerned about public participation.
“As long as we are prepared to ensure that we have good participation options for people then I’m completely onboard with transitioning as quickly as everyone else on the board would like to,” he said.
Myette said that they will have to decide if they will lift the mask mandate or not for the Town Hall and if they will still continue to have a zoom format option as well for public participation in case members of the public want to participate but don’t feel comfortable with being in person.
The Board voted in favor of having the first in person meeting at Chester Town Hall be on June 10.
