The Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado, reports that a cluster of sunspots, which previously caused a widespread aurora display, has rotated back into view. These sunspots can trigger solar storms that lead to auroras on Earth. However, predicting exactly when these displays will occur is challenging.
Meteorologist Nathan Jeruzal from the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids mentioned that heavy cloud cover on Monday and Tuesday nights might hinder viewing. However, the weather is expected to clear up on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights, providing the best chances for skywatchers in the Greater Lansing area to see the lights.
Enthusiastic skywatchers are hopeful, especially since June 6 marks a new moon, resulting in darker skies and potentially more vibrant auroras. Dahl noted that while the sunspot group known as Region 3697 is now facing Earth, it is still too early to determine if it will produce another coronal mass ejection (CME). Predicting solar flares and CMEs remains difficult due to the limitations of current science.
