U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) brought some heartwarming news to Philadelphia’s Mazzoni Center on Thursday, announcing a $400,000 funding boost as part of the 2024 government funding bill. His visit, perfectly timed during Pride Month, emphasized the significance of supporting LGBTQ+ communities.
Senator Casey highlighted the importance of this funding, stating that it would be used to upgrade the center’s vital equipment like machines for checking health metrics, security systems, air conditioning, and importantly, to purchase a generator. “This community project funding will modernize the center’s basic equipment,” Casey remarked.
The Mazzoni Center, known as the largest LGBTQ nonprofit in Philadelphia, plays a crucial role in the community, providing a safe space and essential healthcare to around 15,000 clients each year.
“For many of our clients, this is the only place they feel safe coming for care,” shared David Weisberg, the center’s Executive Development and Communications Officer. The center’s dedicated team of 130 staff members works tirelessly to ensure that everyone receives the care they need.
Dr. Stacey Trooskin, the Executive Medical Officer at Mazzoni Center, elaborated on the wide range of services they provide, from gender-affirming care and HIV treatment to primary care and medication for opioid use disorder. “We pride ourselves on being a one-stop shop for all of our patients,” she said.
In the past year, the center administered over 5,500 vaccines and conducted lab work for more than 7,200 visits. Dr. Trooskin underscored the importance of having reliable electricity, especially as they care for over 100 HIV patients every month. “We are incredibly grateful and quite relieved to have access to a generator that will protect us from service dysfunction,” she expressed.
Beyond equipment upgrades, the federal funds will also help expand their low-threshold services for STI, HIV, and viral hepatitis testing at their Washington West location.
Sultan Shakir, the President and Executive Officer of the Mazzoni Center, highlighted the impact of this funding: “This will make a real impact on our ability to provide culturally competent care to individuals who need it in our community.”
Senator Casey wrapped up his visit with a message of hope and celebration, expressing his joy in sharing such positive news during Pride Month. The Mazzoni Center’s leadership and staff echoed his sentiments, looking forward to the continued support and expansion of their crucial services.
