A local baker and newcomer to the Crystal Avenue business scene remained open this week after thieves broke in and took money from her cash register.
Carina Hultgren opened Carina’s Cakes in November after baking for years for friends and relatives. She grew up in a baking family, but taught herself the art of cake decorating.
“It kind of snowballed,” she said of her baking business. “People said, ‘You better do something with it.’”
She discovered money gone from the register on Thursday morning, July 25. She thinks thieves entered through a back window.
“I was angry, frustrated, sad,” she said. “The whole range of emotions.”
Her customers have been supportive, she said, as has the town of Derry. “It’s a big town, but it has spirit, heart, a sense of community,” said Hultgren, who has lived in Derry since 2003.
Derry Police Capt. Vern Thomas said the break-in remains under investigation. Those with information are urged to call the department at 432-6111.
