Beeman Trophy Claimed by Pinkerton

There are still two events left in the 2016 Beeman Trophy games series between the spring varsity sports squads from Pinkerton Academy and Londonderry High School, but the academy has already assured itself of retaining the much-desired trophy by winning seven of the first nine events.

The academy snagged a four-team sweep in track and field action Tuesday, April 19, with its male and female varsity teams and its male and female unified contingents all winning at LHS to begin Pinkerton’s success right away.

Then Saturday, April 23, the Astro contingents collected wins in girls’ and boys’ lacrosse and boys’ volleyball while the host Lancers won softball and baseball to make the overall team tally 7-2 at the end of that long sports day.

The Londonderry and Pinkerton boys’ and girls’ tennis teams will wrap up Beeman Trophy play on May 18, but those battles will be purely academic, with the 2016 Beeman competition already decided in the Derry school’s favor.

The Beeman Trophy games – so named in honor of former Pinkerton star athlete and coach Mike Beeman, who also taught and coached at LHS – began in the early 1990’s as an extension of the annual Mack Plaque games between the two rival schools.
