Bargersville, Indiana Fire Department Warns Against Ice Dangers Amid Winter Storm

In Bargersville, Indiana, authorities are warning residents about the dangers of venturing onto ice over bodies of water, especially during the current winter storm.

Deputy Chief Michael Pruitt of the Bargersville Fire Department explained that the region doesn’t experience the prolonged cold temperatures needed to create thick, stable ice, like in northern states. The frequent thawing and refreezing of ice throughout the winter make it unreliable and unsafe.

The fire department frequently encounters situations where individuals, including children and pets, attempt recreational activities on ponds, thinking the ice is safe. However, ice can be dangerously thin, leading to the risk of falling through.

Pruitt urged people to avoid ice on bodies of water and call 911 if they see someone on the ice.

If someone does fall through, he advises against going after them, as it can result in becoming a second victim. Instead, he suggests throwing a flotation device, such as a basketball, to assist them until help arrives.
