This report details an incident involving a barge being towed down the Tennessee River that collided with the support of the CSX railroad bridge.
According to officials from the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency TWRA, the bridge sustained only minor cosmetic damage. Since it involved a commercial vessel, the United States Coast Guard is investigating.
The Coast Guard indicated that the incident did not pose a hazard to navigation, which is why a Special Marine Information Broadcast SMIB was not issued.
However, boaters in the area, specifically members of the Vol Navy, expressed concerns as one of the lines on a different barge snapped, coming dangerously close to their boat.
Authorities are continuing to look into the situation, and WVLT News is awaiting additional information from CSX regarding the condition of the bridge.
