After having to sit on the sidelines last year due to the COVID-19 Pandemic forced a halt to the fall sports season at Pinkerton Academy, the Astros Fall Spirit squad regained their elite status of Division I State Champions on Sunday morning.

The NHIAA Division I Fall Spirit State Championship Tournament was hosted by Pinkerton Academy on Sunday, Nov. 7, and the Astros squad edged out last year’s championship team, Dover High School, by just 1.7 points.

The PA girls finished the championship with 105.1 points. Dover finished second with 103.4 and Cord was third in the division with 101.3.

There were 16 high school teams competing in this year’s tournament and fans filled the stands of the Hackler Gymnasium with a room full of energy and excitement throughout each three minute routine performed, but the hometown crowd overwhelmed the room with their cheers.

Three year varsity team senior, Rachel Swanson was extatict about the win, “This year our team gave it their all, after not getting to compete last year. We made sure to give it our all this entire season.”

Her teammate, junior Brielle Bryson was also happy with the team winning the title, “No matter what, the team pushed through this entire season. It really showed how much everyone on the team really cared for the sport and each other.”

In the last 11 years, the Pinkerton squad has won nine fall titles and all but one of the championships that they participated in, losing to Londonderry back in 2017.

Members of the team are: Seniors, Amanda Bryson, Rachel Swanson, Skylar Neilsen, Anna Sgaggs, Kamryn Thompson, Madison Baker, Brooke Drouin and Kylie Souza. Juniors, Emily Lawrence, Emily Taylor, Haleigh Bowler, Sarah Taylor and Brielle Bryson. Sophomores Jaylan Audette and Shelby Scott and Freshman Sara DiClemente, Mackenzie Bergstrom, Kelsey Dionne, Kiareese Perez and Alicia Nicholas.

The team’s long-time head coach Michelle McCarty was assisted this year by Ben King and Alexis Chrissanthis.
