Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez AOC has publicly called for New York City Mayor Eric Adams to resign following federal raids on his top aides and a series of resignations, including that of Police Commissioner Edward Caban.
Ocasio-Cortez’s criticism of Adams, a fellow Democrat, marks a significant shift, as she had previously avoided direct confrontations with the mayor.
The raids, part of an ongoing federal investigation, targeted high-ranking officials in Adams’ administration, including First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright and Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Philip Banks III.
Adams himself has denied any wrongdoing, although his devices were seized last year, and he recently confirmed receiving a federal subpoena.
Ocasio-Cortez’s demand for his resignation stems from concerns over the impact of these investigations on the city’s governance, particularly in recruiting and retaining qualified staff.
Adams fired back at Ocasio-Cortez, accusing her of hypocrisy and dismissing her call for his resignation as baseless.
He emphasized that no charges have been filed against him and vowed to continue leading the city.
Caban’s resignation, alongside the raids on other key aides, has intensified scrutiny on the Adams administration. Caban’s twin brother, James, is also under investigation for allegedly using his NYPD connections to shield nightclubs from police attention.
Adams appointed Caban as NYPD commissioner in 2023, and he has since been replaced by Interim Commissioner Tom Donlon, a former FBI agent.
This escalating situation has further polarized political factions in New York City as the investigation continues.
