Alec Baldwin Sues New Mexico Prosecutors: Claims Malicious Prosecution Over ‘Rust’ Incident

Legal Action Follows Dismissal of Charges

Baldwin’s legal move comes nearly six months after involuntary manslaughter charges against him were dismissed. A judge ruled that prosecutors failed to disclose crucial evidence to the defense.

In the lawsuit, Baldwin claims he was unfairly targeted and accuses prosecutors of evidence manipulation, stating they were driven by a desire to convict him at all costs. The filing also alleges a deliberate effort to scapegoat him and lists claims of malicious abuse of process, intentional spoliation of evidence, defamation, and violations of the New Mexico Civil Rights Act.

Prop Gun Safety and Baldwin’s Defense

The lawsuit asserts that Baldwin followed standard safety protocols on set, stating he was handed a prop gun and loudly declared “cold gun” to signal that the weapon had been inspected and was safe.

Other Legal Developments in the ‘Rust’ Case

While Baldwin’s charges were dropped, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the film’s armorer, is serving a one-and-a-half-year prison sentence. Her case is currently under appeal.

Baldwin’s Return to Public Life

Despite the legal controversies, Baldwin resumed filming “Rust” in August 2024. The movie premiered globally in November, marking his return to acting. Baldwin has also made appearances on Saturday Night Live and announced a new reality TV project with his family.

This legal battle adds another chapter to the ongoing fallout from the tragic “Rust” shooting incident, sparking debates about responsibility, safety protocols, and prosecutorial conduct.
