INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The ACLU of Indiana, along with the national American Civil Liberties Union, is fighting against Indiana’s law that bans gender-affirming care for transgender youth.
The law, passed in 2023, stops healthcare providers from giving or referring anyone under 18 for gender-affirming treatment. A lawsuit was filed claiming the ban breaks the law by:
- Violating the Equal Protection Clause by unfairly targeting transgender youth.
- Violating parents’ rights to make medical decisions for their children with the help of doctors.
The ACLU says the ban has caused serious problems. Families now have to leave Indiana to get care, and local doctors can’t even discuss treatments happening out of state.
In a statement, the ACLU called gender-affirming care well-researched, necessary, and lifesaving and promised to keep fighting to protect transgender youth and their rights.
