An 8-year-old child was found dead in a car after police shot and killed a man suspected of murdering his wife on a bridge between New Hampshire and Maine, officials reported on Thursday.
The man’s identity has not been released. According to a news release from Maine State Police, the man called 911 at 2:07 a.m., stating that he had fought with his wife and that she was dead.
Police were sent to the couple’s home in Troy, New Hampshire, where they found the woman’s body.
The man’s car was later found parked on the Piscataqua River Bridge on Interstate 95, on the Maine side of the state line. Troopers from both Maine and New Hampshire tried to persuade him to surrender.
The bridge was closed for several hours to protect the public while negotiations took place, said Maine State Police. However, the negotiations failed, and the man got out of the car and raised a gun.
Troopers fired at the man, who then appeared to fall into the Piscataqua River. His body was recovered from the water, and he was pronounced dead.
