Former Clark County Sheriff Jamey Noel Sentenced to 15 Years for $4 Million Theft

The case of former Clark County Sheriff Jamey Noel is a striking example of corruption within public office, leading to a 15-year prison sentence after his involvement in a sprawling financial and ethical scandal.

Noel admitted to 27 felony charges, including theft and official misconduct, siphoning over $4 million from the Utica Township Volunteer Firefighters Association UTVFA and the sheriff’s department.

His actions funded lavish personal expenses, including vacations, child support, and an extensive automobile collection, severely impacting the local fire and EMS services.

Special Prosecutor Ric Hertel, who was appointed to the case last year, played a key role in unraveling Noel’s extensive web of misconduct.

Investigations began in mid-2023, uncovering wide-reaching illegal activities that also implicated Noel’s estranged wife, Misty, their daughter, Kasey, and former Clark County Councilwoman Brittney Ferree, with charges ranging from theft to conflict of interest.

Noel’s misconduct extended beyond financial crimes, including directing jail staff to run personal errands on county time and violating bond conditions by possessing firearms.

Despite Noel’s courtroom apology, law enforcement, particularly Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter, expressed dissatisfaction, emphasizing that Noel had numerous opportunities to take responsibility prior to being caught.

Hertel, on the other hand, is hopeful that this sentencing represents a turning point for the community, allowing it to begin the healing process.

The case against Noel is not yet fully concluded, as four others, including family members and local officials, still face legal proceedings.
