RALEIGH, N.C. WNCN — A North Carolina National Guard Black Hawk helicopter crew has been grounded following an incident where the aircraft flew low over a donation and supply area for Hurricane Helene victims, resulting in three tents being blown over and supplies scattering.
The incident occurred in Burnsville on Sunday, and video footage captured by a bystander suggested that the helicopter’s maneuver seemed “deliberate.” According to a news release, the UH-60 Black Hawk was on a mission to deliver generators when the situation unfolded.
Following the disruption caused by the rotor wash, the crew aborted the landing for safety reasons and departed the area. The National Guard is currently collaborating with local air operations to evaluate any damage caused by the incident.
The North Carolina National Guard emphasized that safety is their top priority, especially given the increased air operations in the region in response to Hurricane Helene. An investigation into the incident is underway.
Initially, the Connecticut National Guard mistook the helicopter for one of their own, but they later confirmed it was a North Carolina National Guard aircraft involved in the situation.
For those looking to support Hurricane Helene relief efforts, donations can be made through CBS 17’s initiative.
