After putting forth championship performances at New Hampshire wrestling competitions during the last month, Pinkerton Academy standout grapplers Dylan Barreiro and Kevin Ell both proved that they belong among the top wrestlers in the region last weekend.
Barreiro and Ell were among three Pinkerton grapplers who competed at the New England Wrestling Championships in Providence, R.I., on Friday and Saturday, and brought back medals for finishing among the top six finishers in their respective weight classes.
Senior Ell, who snared New Hampshire Division I and Meet of Champions titles during the two weeks prior to the New England Meet, finished sixth in his 220-pound division by narrowly falling to Andrew Marino of Trumbull, Conn., in a 2-0 decision in their class’s bout to decide who would finish fifth and who would end up sixth at the New Englands.
Sophomore Barreiro, who placed second in his 170-pound class at the Division I meet but rebounded to defeat his D-I meet opponent Keaton Peterson of Manchester Central for the Meet of Champions’ title a week later, lost to Peterson in the battle for fifth place at the New England event. Barreiro dropped a 3-0 decision in that bout to finish sixth overall.
Pinkerton also had sophomore stalwart Shayne McCann, who took second places in his 113-pound class at the D-I event and the Meet of Champions, gain some important experience by competing at the 2014 New England Meet.
The Astro trio finished a respectable 31st out of some 160 competing teams at the regional competition.
